The short-term pursuit of lower body weight in order to gain competitive advantages, known as "Acute Weight Reduction (AWR)," is a common practice in Olympic disciplines with weight categories. Athletes consciously lower their body weight in order to compete in a lower weight class, believing that they can maintain their strength, power, explosiveness, and other performance-related benefits, despite this weight reduction. However, this weight reduction can also be associated with unintended risks.

In this context, Team Belgium's Expert Panel has taken a crucial step to reduce unhealthy body weight reduction methods. Experts and medical professionals have worked intensively together to discuss and analyze various aspects of safe and healthy weight loss. The result of this joint effort is a consensus statement on 'Acute Weight Reduction'. This statement addresses various facets associated with weight loss in the final days leading up to competition events.

This statement focuses on the short-term and long-term health of the athletes. It also touches on the need to make informed decisions in this process. This statement is the guideline for the athletes, coaches, federations and medical staff regarding this topic.

With this consensus statement, the BOIC not only wants to create awareness, but also to take concrete steps towards healthier and safer practices within the sport. This approach is a clear milestone in the pursuit of a balance between peak performance and the well-being of our athletes.

With health as a priority, we are taking steps together towards a safer top-level sports environment.
